How this debt payoff estimate works

The estimate applies one-twelfth of the annual interest rate to the remaining balance each month, then applies the payment to interest before principal. The final payment may be smaller than the regular payment.

It assumes a fixed rate, one payment per month, no new charges, and no fees, penalties, promotional rates, or payment changes. Actual lender calculations and payoff amounts can differ, so use your statement or contact the lender for an exact payoff quote.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that amortizing payments cover both principal and interest, and that longer repayment generally costs more interest. Read the CFPB explanation of amortization.
